Men's Bags

What is a “Vegan” Men’s Bag?

A vegan men’s bag is quite simply any kind of bag (a messenger bag, backpack, tote, satchel, briefcase or other), that’s made from materials that are considered cruelty-free, rather than being made from the skin of an animal.

What materials are used?

Instead of leather, suede, python or crocodile skin, for example, vegan bags can be made from a wide-variety of materials that are considered cruelty-free and animal-friendly, including (but not limited to):

  • Hemp
  • Acrylic
  • Wood
  • Cork
  • Bamboo
  • Jute
  • Polyester
  • Nylon
  • Linen
  • Cotton
  • Up-cycled materials such as tires, pop can tabs, coffee bean bags, car fabric, and others
  • MuSkin (mushroom-based ‘leathery’ material)
  • Faux Suede or “Suedette”
  • Faux Leather (sometimes known as “Leatherette” or “Pleather”)

Please Note: Faux leather can be made from many different polymers and fibers, such as PVC, microfibre, recycled plastic, recycled polyester, degradable polyurethane and many others.

Why buy a men’s bag that’s vegan?

When you look into the materials used to make everyday items, such as messenger bags, clothing, shoes and belts, you’ll find that oftentimes the materials originate from cruel and unnecessary methods. It comes down to this: if you buy a vegan-friendly bag, you’re buying an animal-friendly bag.

Does buying one bag that’s vegan really make a difference?

Yes! And here’s how it works; let’s say you buy a briefcase made from up-cycled pop can tabs, and you show it off around the office. People at work think it’s cool, and maybe get a bit jealous. As a result, one of your colleagues goes out and gets one made from up-cycled keyboard keys, instead of a leather one…this cycle repeats as they show their friends and as people ask them about it (just think of the current funky dress socks trend). You’ve now started a vegan movement within your circle of influence. What ends up happening is that all these vegan briefcases and other bags are being bought by your colleagues and friends, and their friends. The demand for these vegan bags tells manufacturers, designers, retailers and marketers, that there’s an upswing in demand for these animal-friendly products. Demand fuels supply, which in turn, reduces demand (and eventually supply) of bags made from animal skins.

Are vegan bags expensive?

It really depends on the bag. Vegan messengers, totes, backpacks and briefcases, just like their non-vegan counterparts, are designed and produced by different designers and brands, are sold at different kinds of stores, and can be made from a diverse range of materials. Their prices can vary accordingly.

Should I get rid of non-vegan bags that I already own?

This is as as hotly debated a topic as any within the vegan community. In our opinion, it’s up to you to decide. Many people see it as wasteful, very expensive, and quite honestly impractical to just get rid of every non-vegan thing they own all at once. For example, do you have 2 leather couches? Are you going to get rid of them and spend $2,500 on new ones right away, or just get couches without leather next time you need furniture? Our only recommendation is to give things away that you are replacing (or sell them and give the money to an animal-related cause), rather than throwing them out to end up in a landfill.

What companies make vegan bags?

There are 2 types of companies that make vegan bags for men; companies whose main products are made from leather, suede and other dated and cruel materials, but who include vegan items to appeal to the vegan or eco-conscious market. Then there are companies that exclusively make vegan products, for ethical, sustainability, business or other reasons. Some companies whose men's bags are entirely vegan include:

  • Alchemy Goods
  • Corkor
  • M.R.K.T.
  • Matt & Nat
  • Tokyo Bags

How do you choose which companies to list?

We keep a growing list of companies that we find by way of social media, word of mouth, and by other means, whose entire catalogue of men’s bags seems to be vegan and animal-friendly. We contact these companies to check that they don’t use any animal-derived materials (adhesives, materials, etc.) in the production of their goods. If we’re convinced they’re vegan-friendly, and their vegan items are listed on Amazon, then we display them here.

Do you list vegan bags from non-vegan companies?

We think it’s great that more and more non-vegan companies are adding cruelty-free products to their catalogue. However, when we contact these companies, we often have a hard time getting straight answers from them with regard to which of their products are 100% free of animal-derived materials, and which aren’t. We need to have complete confidence that what we list here for you is vegan, so when we don’t get straight answers, we don't list products. We also want to be careful about directing you and other visitors to a company’s Amazon store if we can't confirm that those products are vegan.
