What is a ‘Vegan Clutch'?
Quite simply, a vegan clutch is just like your everyday leather clutch, the only difference being they are made from materials that are considered cruelty-free, and not from the skin of a sweet little animal. They can be used for casual or dressed up occasions, and can be the perfect accent to outfits of any kind; some of them are so cute they can stand alone and don’t need to be paired with a specific outfit.
What materials are used?
Vegan clutches can be made from a wide-variety of materials that are considered cruelty-free and vegan, including (but not limited to):
- Hemp
- Cork
- Jute
- Bamboo
- Nylon
- Linen
- MuSkin (mushroom-based ‘leathery’ material)
- Faux Suede or “Suedette”
- Funky recycled materials such as tires, inner tubes, seat belts and hoses!
- Faux Leather (sometimes known as “Leatherette” or “Pleather”)
Please Note: Faux leather can be made from PVC, microfibre, recycled plastic, recycled PET polyester, degradable polyurethane and many others.
Why buy a clutch that’s vegan?
All too often as consumers, we tend to overlook the origin of the materials used to make our clutches, purses, shoes, belts, or clothes when we’re making a purchase; we seem most concerned with the look, the feel, and the price of the item. But if you look a little deeper, you’ll see that many of the materials used in these everyday items are derived from shockingly cruel methods that we won’t get into here; let’s just say that leather is NOT a by-product of the meat industry as many people believe. Buying a vegan-friendly wallet is buying an animal-friendly wallet. Aside from the animal-welfare side of things, some of these materials are more sustainable than leather, like those made from cork, and some are just downright funky, like those made from up-cycled inner tubes or hoses.
Does buying one clutch even make a difference?
You bet your vegan boots it does! Here’s how it works; when you buy a vegan clutch (or any other vegan product), you’re telling manufacturers, designers, retailers and everyone in the supply chain that there’s a growing market for animal-friendly products. Revenue coming in from these products will help support the product line, so in turn, more of that product will be made and stocked in stores. Demand fuels supply. Conversely; the more vegan products that are bought, the less cruelty-derived products that get sold. Companies start to get the message that the demand for these outdated, animal-derived products is shrinking, which kills demand for them.
Are vegan clutches expensive?
It really depends on the clutch. Vegan clutches, just like their non-vegan counterparts, come from different designers and brands, are sold at different stores, and can be made from a diverse range of possible materials, and their prices can vary accordingly.
What companies make vegan clutches?
There are basically 2 types of companies that make vegan clutches; there are those that primarily make leather clutches, purses and other accessories and offer a vegan line to appeal to the vegan or eco-conscious market, and then there are companies that exclusively make vegan products, whether ‘accidentally’, or for ethical, ecological or business reasons. How do you choose which companies to list?
Our process is pretty simple actually. We keep an ever-growing list of companies that we find through social media, by word of mouth, and by other means, whose entire line of clutches and accessories seems to be vegan-friendly. We then contact those companies to double-check that they don’t use any animal-derived materials or by-products in the production of their clutches and accessories. If we’re convinced they’re vegan-friendly, and they sell on Amazon, we list them here for your convenience.
Why don’t you list vegan clutches from non-vegan companies?
We feel that it’s important for non-vegan companies to get into the market of offering vegan products, for so many reasons…just putting them on shelves makes people buy them. However, we also seem to have a hard time getting consistent answers from these types of companies with regard to the origin of the materials they use in their ‘vegan’ products. Bottom line is that if we can’t be confident that we’re getting accurate and complete information from a company, we won’t list their products. We need to be 100% confident that what we list here for you is vegan.
