About Eco Vegan Shoes

Based in Zoetermeer (The Netherlands), Eco Vegan shoes is one of the most certified vegan footwear brands out there. Their main approach to sustainability is to use long-lasting and durable materials, while incorporating some recycled materials.

Is Eco Vegan Shoes intentionally vegan?

Yes! Eco Vegan Shoes is an intentionally vegan brand, rather than one that uses vegan materials out of convenience, or for other reasons. In fact, the company was founded by Phil Loyley because he couldn't find vegan shoes that met his needs. They are also one of the most thoroughly certified vegan footwear companies out there - being certified by The Dutch Association for Veganism; The Vegan Society; and The Animal-Free Fashion Project.

Is Eco Vegan Shoes' footwear eco-friendly/sustainable?

Eco Vegan Shoes certainly makes an effort to make their shoes, boots and sandals as eco-friendly as they can. They admit to the sustainability shortcomings of the main material of their soles and faux leather uppers, which is PVC-free polyurethane, but defend its use by virtue of it being incredibly long-lasting, even more so than animal-derived leather. Their insoles are partly made of recycled polyurethane, and partly of polyurethane from castor oil. Eco Vegan Shoes also claims that the fabric used for some of their shoes is 80-100% biodegradable.

Does Eco Vegan Shoes use green shipping methods?

It's unclear from their website if Eco Vegan Shoes uses net-zero or negative emissions shipping partners, either domestically or internationally. We have asked them for clarification and are currently awaiting reply. It is worth noting, however, that their efforts for sustainability extend even into their website's hosting, which is certified by the Green Web Foundation.

Does Eco Vegan Shoes use eco-friendly packaging?

It's unclear from their website if Eco Vegan Shoes uses recycled, recyclable, biodegradable, or other forms of eco-friendly and sustainable packaging. We have asked them for details regarding the materials they use for packaging, and are currently awaiting reply.

Is Eco Vegan Shoes' footwear recyclable or biodegradable?

Eco Vegan Shoes claims that their insoles and their fabric uppers are 80-100% biodegradable. It’s unclear from the information available on their website if the rest of their shoes are biodegradable and/or recyclable. We have asked for clarification from the Eco Vegan Shoes team and are currently awaiting reply.

How should I dispose of my worn out Eco Vegan Shoes footwear?

We've asked Eco Vegan Shoes is they have a process in place to take back their customers’ worn down shoes, or if they are currently developing such a program, or plan to, and are awaiting reply. In the meantime, we recommend donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components.

Is Eco Vegan Shoes' Footwear ethically made?

Their women's footwear is made in Portugal, and all shoes soles are made in Italy, which means these labourers are protected by the stringent labour laws of the European Union, which also include strong health and safety regulations. However, their men's shoes are made by Mangul Jaya in Indonesia. Eco Vegan Shoes does claim that the workers there are paid enough to be able to make a living for their families, and that there is a praying room and everyone is allowed to practice their religion, while also claiming that they "do not do child labour" in that factory. As a non-certifying 3rd party, it's difficult for us to confirm or dispute this.

Does Eco Vegan Shoes footwear ever go on sale?

On their website, some of their shoes are offered at a 10% discount if you send Eco Vegan Shoes a picture of you "participating in animal activism". Their newsletter signup area also says, "don't miss out on our latest news and sales," which would imply that their shoes, boots and/or sandals to go on sale from time to time.

Where can I buy Eco Vegan Shoes footwear?

In addition to buying directly from their website, you can find Eco Vegan Shoes at a wide variety of retailers across Europe.

Are Eco Vegan Shoes' safety boots & shoes certified?

Yes! The work/safety shoes and boots (for both men and women) made by Eco Vegan Shoes are made using a non-metallic lightweight composite toe, and have the EU certification: Safety EN ISO 20345: 2007 S1-P-SRC. They also feature an anti-slip pattern that Eco Vegan Shoes claims "exceeds European SRC standards".

Are Eco Vegan Shoes' non-slip shoes also certified?

Yes! Any product on their website that mentions having an "Anti slip pattern exceeding European SRC standards" is considered a certified non-slip shoe, sandal or boot.

What materials are used to make Eco Vegan Shoes' Footwear?

The OrthoLite® insoles are partly made of recycled polyurethane, and partly of polyurethane from castor oil, although some of the soles contain TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) and TR, a synthetic kind of rubber. Their soles and faux leather uppers are made of hardwearing PVC free polyurethane. The shoe laces are polyester. Most of the fabrics and finishes they use for the shoes are developed and produced by Schoeller (and all of their products are BlueSign® approved, meaning that everyone in the whole production chain can work in safe and healthy working conditions and that the resources are as environmentally friendly as possible).

Does Eco Vegan Shoes promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?

Eco Vegan Shoes appears to employ some elements of a circular economy, such as using high-quality materials, creating long-lasting footwear; using some recycled and biodegradable materials, and employing fair labour (see above question for more information). Some areas in which they could improve is by using a 'made-to-order' production system, which could cut down on production waste, and introducing more natural materials.

Is Eco Vegan Shoes a charitable company?

We have asked the Eco Vegan Shoes team about any charitable initiatives they're involved with (if any), and are currently awaiting reply, as there is no such information available on their website.
