About Fairticken

Made in partnership with Portuguese shoe manufacturer KayakStorm since 2015, Fairticken is the private label shoe brand for the Fairticken store in Kesselbrink, Germany.

What materials are used to make Fairticken footwear?

Fairticken uses a variety of organic, recycled, synthetic and natural materials to make their shoes. On the product description pages on their website, Fairticken will provide a general breakdown of the materials used for each of their shoes. Typically, the outer material is made of natural cork, recycled cotton or Italian microfiber, or microfibre made from recycled PET. The lining is often made of organic cotton, a recycled PET-based felt, or EQ Porellina (a microfibre that consists of 50-60% polyurethane and 40-50% non-food grain). The removable insoles are made of 'recycled materials,' the soles often contain recycled tires or recycled shoe soles, or even algae from freshwater lakes.

Are Fairticken shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?

From an environmentally-friendly materials standpoint, Fairticken shoes could be considered quite environmentally-friendly, as they incorporate so many recycled and natural materials, and are always trying to incorporate newer and increasingly eco-friendly materials. From a carbon footprint standpoint, water usage, chemical usage, and general natural resource usage standpoint, it's difficult to asses the impact that Fairticken has, and what they do to remediate it. Fairticken does not currently provide data as to their environmental impact or remediation efforts, so it's difficult to accurately asses them in either of these regards.

Does Fairticken use green shipping methods?

Fairticken told use that they work with DHL GoGreen, which based on the brands we've spoken to, is largely considered the best option available at the moment in terms of having effective logistics with minimal harm to the environment.

Does Fairticken use eco-friendly packaging?

Fairticken has informed us that they "use, if possible, packaging again from customer returns. If not, we us packaging from recycled paper or grass."

Do Fairticken shoes ever go on sale?

Yes - on Fairticken's website, they list an offer for 5% off for new customers. There is also a Sale section of their website, with markdowns ranging from 20-60%.

Fairticken has informed us that their shoes are not recyclable or compostable.

How should I dispose of my worn out Fairticken shoes?

According to the Fairticken team, "we also plan to develop a recycling system for some of our shoes." We have asked them where they are in the development of this program, and they've informed us that, "The recycling program is not easy. Even a simple (shoe) model has too much different materials for clean recycling." Many companies that we've spoken with that are planning to implement a recycling program share the same challenges.

Where can I buy Fairticken shoes?

It looks like Fairticken shoes can only be purchased from their store in Kesselbrink, Germany, from their website, or from their social channels. According to Fairticken, their customers outside of Germany & Austria should contact them before ordering, as special arrangements need to be made.

Are Fairticken shoes ethically made?

Yes! Fairticken shoes, boots and sandals are made near Porto, Portugal, which means their labourers are protected by the stringent labour laws of the European Union, which also include strong health and safety regulations.

Does Fairticken promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?

Fairticken appears to incorporate several elements of a circular economy, such as using recycled and sustainably sourced natural materials, making timeless styles, sourcing their materials close to their production facility, re-using packaging, and employing fair labour. They are also working at introducing a recycling program for some of their shoes.

Is Fairticken a charitable company?

We’ve asked the Fairticken team about any charitable initiatives they're involved with (if any), and they told us that they "are planning to donate 1€ from every sold shoe to JUSTDIGGIT, which is an NGO for reforestation in Africa. At the moment we work the details out."
