Mumka vegan leather-look golden retriever sneakers

Mumka is Likely a Vegan Brand

Mumka claims that their product are “100% handmade and vegan-friendly.” Although they do not currently have any certification to verify their vegan claims, they told us that, “Our materials are all animal free ingredients and we are an animal-friendly brand” when we asked them if all of their materials and ingredients (such as in their glues) are vegan.

About Mumka

Mumka is a brand for which there is very little information available online. We have reached out to their team for answers to some questions relating to the production ethics of the company, and their sustainability and charity efforts (if any), and are awaiting reply.

What materials are used to make Mumka shoes?

Mumka uses the following materials to make its footwear: Exterior: Synthetic Leather (100% polyurethane - PU); Interior: Cotton Coating; Ink: Solvent Free Materials Used. Please note, that on their website, each shoe, boot and sandals lists these same exact materials, which seems inaccurate given some models clearly don't use cotton - this erodes our trust in the brand.

Are Mumka shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?

Given that Mumka shoes have polyurethane (PU) listed as the main material used, they generally wouldn't be considered to be very environmentally friendly, depending on the specific composition of that PU (for example, a traditionally made fossil fuel-derived PU is much less eco-friendly than a plant oil-derived PU that's solvent-free and uses a recycled polyester backing).

Does production of Mumka shoes create a lot of CO2 emissions?

From a carbon footprint standpoint, it's difficult to asses the impact that Mumka has, and what they do to remediate it. Mumka does not currently provide data as to their environmental impact or remediation efforts, so it's difficult to accurately asses them in these areas.

Does Mumka use green shipping methods?

It's unclear from their website if Mumka uses net-zero or negative emissions shipping partners, either domestically or internationally. We’ve asked them for clarification, and are currently awaiting reply.

Does Mumka use eco-friendly packaging?

It's unclear from their website if Mumka uses recycled, recyclable, compostable, or other forms of eco-friendly and sustainable packaging. We’ve asked them for details regarding the materials they use for packaging, and are currently awaiting reply.

Are Mumka shoes recyclable?

It’s unclear from the information available on their website if Mumka’s shoes are recyclable or compostable. We’ve asked for clarification from the Mumka team, and are currently awaiting reply.

Is Mumka a charitable company?

We’ve asked the Mumka team about any charitable initiatives they're involved with (if any), and are currently awaiting reply, as there is no such information available on their website.

How should I dispose of my worn out Mumka shoes?

We’ve asked the Mumka team if they currently have, or are developing, a shoe recycling program, and are awaiting reply. In the meantime, Get it Vegan recommends either trying to have them repaired, donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components.

Where can I buy Mumka shoes?

Mumka shoes can be purchased from their website, and can be shipped worldwide. We've asked them if they have plans to work with retailers, and are currently awaiting reply.

Do Mumka shoes ever go on sale?

Yes - there’s a “Sale” section of their website, and we noticed sales in the area of 20% when we visited. Mumka also offers 10% off your first order when subscribing for their newsletter.

Where are Mumka shoes made?

Mumka has informed us that their shoes are made in Turkey.

Are Mumka shoes ethically made?

With regard to fair labour, the brand states, "At Mumka we care about people and we take special care of all our workers who participate in the manufacturing process of our products, as well as you, who enjoy them. That is why our main policy is Fair Trade, which means that we do not use child labor or any trace of abusive or degrading working conditions." Being that their shoes are made in Turkey, it's difficult for us as an outside, non-certifying 3rd party to verify whether or not Mumka ensures its factory enforces all international and local labour laws, regulations and fair working standards to provide a safe and fair working environment for their workers. While Turkish labour laws are generally seen to be fair, their labour market (specifically their textile industry) is not without its faults.

Does Mumka promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?

It's unclear which slow fashion (ethically made, long-lasting, small batch production) or circular economy principles Mumka follows as a brand, if any. For example, they don't appear to make an effort to use eco-friendly materials (such as recycled, organic, or innovative plant-based materials); they don't provide information about any eco-friendly packaging they use; they don't communicate about any 'green shipping' initiatives they are undertaking; and they have seasonal sales, which can be a sign that they are over-producing their footwear, which can mean that a lot of unused items are going directly to the landfill.
