About Munjoi

"Our shoe obsession is getting out of hand - and the industry is a wasteful one. To combat this problem, we created the All Dai, It’s made almost entirely from plant-based materials (cotton, hemp, algae, and sugar cane) and can transform into 4 different shoes." - Munjoi team

What materials are used to make Munjoi shoes?

Munjoi uses a blend of soft and breathable cotton, a small percentage of spandex, and strong hemp fibre for their uppers. For their sole foam, they've partnered with Bloom, who removes algae waste from polluted waterways, and combined that with sugarcane.

Are Munjoi shoe materials eco-friendly/sustainable?

From an environmentally-friendly materials standpoint, Munjoi shoes are considered quite environmentally-friendly, as they incorporate so many natural materials. One of these materials is their algal bloom-incorporating soles - when algal blooms are removed from bodies of water, the water becomes cleaner. They also use hemp, which is known to be one of the most eco-friendly footwear, clothing, and accessory materials on the planet. Munjoi also uses cotton, which if not organic, can actually be quite environmentally destructive (even if it is natural), as it involves large amount of water and pesticides to produce, and is known to cause soil erosion and land degradation.

Does production of Munjoi shoes create a lot of CO2 emissions?

5.87 kg CO2 is the total calculated greenhouse gas emissions that one pair of the All-Dai creates. According to the brand, they support a carbon offsetting project, which has brought them to being carbon-neutral (as verified by a partnership with Climate Parter).

Does Munjoi use green shipping methods?

It's unclear from their website if Munjoi uses net-zero or negative emissions shipping partners, either domestically or internationally. We’ve asked them for clarification, and are currently awaiting reply. It is worth noting that Munjoi produces far (Putian, China) from where they are based (MA, USA), which itself is contrary to green shipping principles.

Does Munjoi use eco-friendly packaging?

According to the brand, "Munjoi packaging has been designed with the help of Euro Brand Management GmbH to sustain packaging transportation without the need of an additional shipping carton. EBM is a B Corp committed and driven to reduce its customers carbon footprint on the environment. The brand also says that, "Our product is climate neutral which includes the packaging. Our shoe box is also the shipping box in one - this way we do not have to put a box into another box when shipping to customers. Our minimal box is 100% recyclable, made with no glue, and uses water/soy based inks and varnish."

Are Munjoi shoes recyclable or biodegradable?

It’s unclear from the information available on their website if Munjoi’s shoes are recyclable or compostable (in their entirety, as some of their components, such as hemp and cotton, are naturally biodegradable). We’ve asked for clarification from the Munjoi team, and are currently awaiting reply.

How should I dispose of my worn out Munjoi shoes?

We’ve asked the Munjoi team if they currently have, or are developing, a shoe recycling program, and are awaiting reply. In the meantime, Get it Vegan recommends either trying to have them repaired, donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components.

Where can I buy Munjoi shoes?

Munjoi shoes can be purchased from their website, and can be shipped internationally (although international orders are considered final by Munjoi). Munjoi shoes are also available at the Portland Dry Goods shoe shop in Portland, Maine, USA.

Do Munjoi shoes ever go on sale?

We haven’t noticed any sales for Munjoi shoes when visiting their site and perusing their social channels. However, they currently offer a $10 discount off of your first order for subscribing to their newsletter.

Where are Munjoi shoes made?

Munjoi shoes are made in Putian, China, which is a major shoe manufacturing hub.

Are Munjoi shoes ethically made?

Being that Munjoi shoes are made in China, it's difficult for us as an outside, non-certifying 3rd party to verify whether or not Munjoi ensures its factory enforces all international and local labour laws, regulations and fair working standards to provide a safe and fair working environment for their workers. The brand has told us that, "We have our own team of people on the floor that make sure of this - we only work with the best factories and suppliers."

Does Munjoi promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?

Munjoi gets mixed reviews from us with regard to their promotion/inclusion of circular economy, principles. In the positive column, they have multi-functional and versatile shoes, use eco-friendly packaging materials, are carbon-neutral, and use mostly natural materials. On the other hand, they produce in a country known for its lax labour laws, don't use organic cotton, and they produce far from where they are based and sell.

Is Munjoi a charitable company?

We’ve asked the Munjoi team about any charitable initiatives they're involved with (if any), and they told us, "Yes, we were running donations on our website through "shopping gives" app up until earlier this year. We also have made contributions to hydropower in the Congo via our climate neutral partner."
