About Newton Vegan Running Shoes

"We’re here for the runners we work with on demo runs. The ones who come to tech sessions to increase their knowledge of natural running form. The retail partners we support as if their store was our own. The kids who want to run, but can’t afford shoes. The Newtonites who started as customers and became family. The elderly people in our hometown of Boulder, Colorado who we deliver meals to every Tuesday." - Newton team

What materials are used to make Newton running shoes?

Newton makes their shoes using a variety of high-grade synthetic materials, many of which are proprietary (such as "Newtonium" heel cushioning), and some of which are recycled. Their soles are made of 'high-wear carbon rubber,' and many of their models contain innovative materials and ingredients or additives, such as EcoPure®, which is a plastic additive that helps plastic biodegrade up to 75% faster. A general overview of the materials used in each shoe can be found within that shoe's product description on the Newton website.

Are Newton running & gym shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?

It's difficult to assess the eco-friendliness of Newton’s footwear, as we don't know the exact composition of their shoes, or the proprietary materials used to make them. We do know however, that Newton uses synthetic materials, and incorporates more and more recycled materials into their designs. Some of their models also include special additives to help their plastics break down faster, although it's not immediately clear if that makes the plastics simply degrade into micro-plastics more quickly, versus eliminating them entirely.

Does production of Newton shoes create a lot of CO2 emissions?

From a carbon footprint standpoint, it's difficult to asses the impact that Newton has, and what they do to remediate it. Newton does not currently provide data as to their environmental impact or remediation efforts, so it's difficult to accurately asses them in these areas.

Does Newton use green shipping methods?

It's unclear from their website if Newton uses net-zero or negative emissions shipping partners, either domestically or internationally. We’ve asked them for clarification, and are currently awaiting reply.

Does Newton use eco-friendly packaging?

It's unclear from their website if Newton uses recycled, recyclable, compostable, or other forms of eco-friendly and sustainable packaging. We’ve asked them for details regarding the materials they use for packaging, and are currently awaiting reply.

Are Newton shoes recyclable?

It’s unclear from the information available on their website if Newton’s shoes are recyclable or compostable. We’ve asked for clarification from the Newton team, and are currently awaiting reply.

How should I dispose of my worn out Newton shoes?

We’ve asked the Newton team if they currently have, or are developing, a shoe recycling program, and are awaiting reply. In the meantime, Get it Vegan recommends either trying to have them repaired, donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components.

Where can I buy Newton running shoes?

Newton running and gym shoes are available at exclusive specialty retail distributors across the United States and around the world or at newtonrunning.com. Although they are available worldwide, Newton running shoes cannot ship to countries where they have an international distribution partnership; the list of such countries can be found here.

Do Newton running and gym shoes ever go on sale?

Yes - there’s a “Sale” section of their website, and we noticed sales in the area of 30% when we visited. Newton also offers a 10% discount when subscribing to their newsletter, and offers American active duty military, police, and firefighters a 35% discount and free shipping on all orders placed through their website.

Where are Newton running and training shoes made?

According to Newton, all of the design, research, and wear testing is done in Boulder, Colorado, USA, and their shoes are produced overseas in several Asian countries (China, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam among others).

Are Newton shoes ethically made?

Being that their shoes are made in Asia, it's difficult for us as an outside, non-certifying 3rd party to verify whether or not Newton Running ensures its factory enforces all international and local labour laws, regulations and fair working standards to provide a safe and fair working environment for their workers. We have reached out to them for clarification on what they do to ensure they are using fair labour, and are currently awaiting reply.

Does Newton promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?

Newton gets mixed reviews from us with regard to their promotion/inclusion of circular economy, principles. In the positive column, they incorporate many recycled and innovative materials into their designs, and partner with Soles 4 soles (and other charities), to give their shoes a second life. On the other side of the coin however, Newton running shoes are: made in countries known to have dubious labour practices; produced far from their headquarters; and made with synthetic materials.

Is Newton Running a charitable company?

Yes! Every Tuesday, the Newton team delivers meals to the elderly in Boulder, Colorado. In addition, all used/returned shoes are donated to low-income high school running programs, as well to 3rd world countries (through One World Running), or donated to Soles 4 Souls.

The variety of their shoe models reflects the variety of technical features and specific uses that they're made for, such as models with more toe bumper for protecting toes during trail running. Their style can be described as 'functional,' and most of their models incorporate a variety of bold colours and patters (although they do have more minimalist designs).
