Venus is Vegan Pointed Toe Modern Ankle Boots

Venus is Vegan is Likely a Fully Vegan Brand

Venus is Vegan claims that their footwear is “100% vegan.” Although they do not currently have any certification to verify these claims, excluding animal-derived materials is built into the ethos and mission of the brand. The brand says they are PETA-approved vegan, but their licensing certification is likely to have lapsed.

About Venus is Vegan

"When life gives you apples .. Yes you make shoes! The upper of our models consists entirely of apple leather. The production of this innovative gamechanger takes place in Italy, re-using the waste from the apple juice industry. Apple leather consists of at least 50% recycled apple fibers and cellulose, so it is a completely natural raw material!" - Venus is Vegan team

Is Venus is Vegan an ethically vegan brand?

Venus is Vegan is an intentionally and ethically vegan brand, rather than one that uses vegan materials out of convenience, or for other reasons. The brand's Founder, Nikita, says, "With VENUS IS VEGAN I want to contribute to the vegan shoe industry, so that this choice can be made easier. Let's step into kindness."

What materials are used to make their shoes?

The brand consistently uses apple leather as the upper material. The other materials of their shoes are mainly recycled materials from wood and rubbers. And the brand says that, "Of course the glues used are also vegan."

Are Venus is Vegan shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?

From an environmentally-friendly materials standpoint, their shoes could be considered quite eco-friendly (at least as far as leather-look/dress footwear is concerned, as there isn’t yet a 100% bio-based, biodegradable material in the market to satisfy its specific characteristics), as they incorporate mostly natural and/or recycled materials into their designs. These materials, while not perfect, are generally considered to be more environmentally friendly than animal-derived leathers (due to the inclusion of various toxic chemicals used in the tanning process, among other reasons). This is backed up by data from inside the fashion industry as well as outside of it. For the data, please see Collective Fashion Justice’s CIRCUMFAUNA initiative.

Does production of their shoes and boots create a lot of harmful emissions?

From a carbon footprint standpoint, it's difficult to asses the impact that Venus is Vegan has, and what they do to remediate it. The brand does not currently provide data as to their environmental impact or remediation efforts, so it's difficult to accurately asses them in these areas.

Does Venus is Vegan use ‘green’ shipping methods?

It's unclear from their website if they use net-zero or negative emissions shipping partners, either domestically or internationally. We’ve asked them for clarification, and they told us, "Yes our delivery partner PostNL sorts our parcels 100% CO2 and emission free. They are the most sustainable of the Netherlands. They deliver the parcels as much as possible by bicycle, electrically and with sustainable fuels. They offset the emissions that remain."

Does Venus is Vegan use eco-friendly packaging?

It's unclear from their website if Venus is Vegan uses recycled, recyclable, compostable, or other forms of eco-friendly and sustainable packaging. We’ve asked them for details regarding the materials they use for packaging, and are currently awaiting reply.

Are their shoes recyclable?

It’s unclear from the information available on their website if Venus is Vegan’s shoes and boots are recyclable or compostable. We’ve asked for clarification from their team, and are currently awaiting reply.

How should I dispose of my old Venus is Vegan shoes?

We’ve asked their team if they currently have, or are developing, a shoe recycling program, and their Founder, Nikita, told us, " No honestly I never thought about that, but I love that idea." In the meantime, Get it Vegan recommends either trying to have them repaired by a local cobbler, donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components.

Which stores can I buy Venus is Vegan shoes from?

Their shoes can be purchased from the Venus is Vegan website, and can be shipped within the EU. You can also buy them from some online vegan marketplaces such as for-vegans.comshoplikeyougiveadamn.com sneakypanda.nl. According to the brand, "Our vision is that our vegan shoes should be affordable for everyone. Our margins are very low to keep it as affordable as possible. Our margins are still too low for physical stores. If our production quantity increases, this will be possible."

Do their shoes ever go on sale?

We haven’t noticed any sales for their Venus is Vegan when visiting their site and perusing their social channels.

Where are Venus is Vegan shoes made?

Venus is Vegan shoes are hand made in Portugal.

Are their shoes made with fair labour?

Yes! Venus is Vegan shoes are made in Portugal, which means their labourers are protected by the stringent labour laws of the European Union, which also include strong health and safety regulations. The brand also told us that, "I am sure that we will get that (fair labour) certification because we work close with a small factory."

Is Venus is Vegan a charitable company?

We’ve asked their team about any charitable initiatives they're involved with (if any), and their Founder, Nikita, told us that, "We help animal shelters and our hearts go out to especially to bird shelters, because every year we find a lot of wounded (young) birds. I think I am a magnet to animals in need. Every time they take me on a new adventure. So we support what we feel is necessary at that moment. Marketing-wise it would be better to stick to one project, but I want it to be a natural process. Another dream is to buy some land where I can start my own animal shelter."

Does Venus is Vegan promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?

Venus is Vegan incorporates some elements of a circular economy, such as: using plant-based leather materials; using recycled materials; making a limited product range; avoiding fast fashion-level pricing; making their products by hand; using a low-impact shipping partner; and employing fair labour.
