What is a ‘Vegan’ Purse/Handbag?

Quite simply, a vegan purse (or handbag) is just like a regular purse, only not made from animal-derived materials, such as leather.

They can carry all of the same items, are just as fashionable and durable as their leather counterparts, but are in better taste.

What materials are used?

Animal-friendly textiles, such as cotton, nylon or any number of others, are often used to make the lining of vegan purses. The exteriors can be made out of several vegan-friendly materials, which may include (but not limited to):

  • Hemp
  • Jute
  • Bamboo
  • Nylon
  • Linen
  • Cotton
  • Denim
  • MuSkin (mushroom-based ‘leathery’ material)
  • Faux Leather, Leatherette or Pleather
  • Faux Suede, or Suedette
  • Faux Fur

Please Note: Please Note: Faux leather can be made from many different polymers and fibers, such as PVC, microfibre, recycled plastic, recycled PET polyester, degradable polyurethane and many others.

Why buy a purse that’s vegan?

Most people never consider where the material used to make their purses, shoes or clothes comes from. We generally only consider their look, their feel, and their price.

But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find that there’s a very real and painful cost to the materials used in these everyday items; animals need their skin more than we need their skin. Buying a vegan-friendly item is buying an animal-friendly item.

Does one purse really make a difference?

Here’s how it works; by purchasing a vegan purse (or any other ‘vegan’ product, for that matter), you’re telling manufacturers and designers that there’s a market for animal-friendly products.

Revenue coming in from these products will help support the product line, so more of them can be made. Demand fuels supply.

This also works two ways; the more vegan products that leave retail shelves, the less animal-derived products being bought. This tells companies that the market for them is shrinking, and the market for cruelty-free products is growing. Lack of demand fuels lack of supply.

Are vegan purses expensive?

Short answer, no. Long answer, it depends on the purse! Just like their non-vegan counterparts, vegan purses come from different designers, from different brands, and can be made from a wide variety of materials.

Just like those that use animal-derived materials, the prices of vegan purses can can fluctuate drastically.

What companies make them?

Companies that make great vegan purses/handbags include:

  • Big Bhudda
  • Deux Lux
  • LeSport Sac
  • Matt & Nat
  • Melie Bianco
  • Alchemy Goods
  • Rock Rebel
  • 88 Handbags
  • ...an every-growing number of great companies!

How do you choose what companies to list?

Our process is pretty simple actually. We keep a growing list of companies we find through social media, through word of mouth, and by other means, that seem to be vegan-friendly.

We then contact those companies to double-check that they don’t use any animal-derived materials in the production of the handbags/purses.

We then check to see if they sell their products on Amazon; if they assure us their products are vegan-friendly and they sell on Amazon, we list them here for your convenience.
