About BC Footwear Vegan Shoes
BC Footwear has a dual mission: to scour the globe to bring its customers the latest fashion trends each season, and to do so while making the world a kinder place by using only 100% cruelty-free and vegan components. They don't, however, appear to be massively invested in the eco-friendliness of their product line (if they are, it's not evident on their website).
What are BC Footwear shoes made of?BC footwear uses a wide variety of natural materials across their lineup, including cotton, raffia, jute and bamboo, as well as synthetic fibres, such as vegan microfibre and high grade polyurethane. They also make use of recycled natural fibres and recycled rubber, although it's not clear how much of any material used in any of their shoes is recycled or not, with the exception of their custom padding system, which utilizes OrthoLite® Hybrid™ foam insoles (made with 5% recycled rubber and 15% repurposed production waste). Their shoe glue is also free of casein, gelatin, beeswax, or any other animal derivative.
Are BC Footwear shoes eco-friendly?While they do incorporate natural and recycled materials into their shoes and boots, they provide little information about the eco-friendliness of their shoes, such as what they do to offset the carbon emissions they create when designing, creating, storing and transporting their shoes, and how much of their shoes are actually made from recycled or recyclable/biodegradable materials. They do however, make their shoe boxes from recycled cardboard and use plant-based ink for printing. A knock against their level of sustainability though is that they are more of a seasonal/trendy brand, which involves such fast-fashion ills as over-production, and less timeless designs which are more likely to be thrown out and replaced before they've worn out.
Are BC Footwear shoes recyclable or biodegradable? We've asked BC Footwear if they have, or are developing, an end-of-life plan for their shoes, and are currently awaiting reply.
Where can I buy BC Footwear shoes?BC Footwear shoes are widely available online and at many leading department stores and retailers. For example, you can buy them on their website, as well as from Amazon (although not from their own branded store), Zappos, Nordstroms, Walmart, DSW and Urban Outfitters. They are also available at many speciality boutiques across the world, and through many online shoe stores.
Do BC Footwear shoes ever go on sale?BC Footwear offers a variety of discounts - at the time of writing this, they offer 15% off of your first order for signing up to their newsletter. They also have a "Sales" tab in their website's main menu, which seems to offer modest discounts in the 10%-20% range.
Where are BC Footwear shoes made?BC Footwear makes its shoes in the Fujian province, on the southeastern coast of China.
Are BC Footwear shoes made under fair working conditions? It's difficult to verify as an outside, non-certifying party as to whether or not BC Footwear ensures its factories enforce all international and local labour laws to provide a safe and fair working environment for their workers. It is worth making note however, that since BC Footwear is a PETA certified vegan brand, the factories they work with must also be committed to maintaining the necessary controls to earn that certification.
Has BC Footwear always been vegan? No, BC Footwear transitioned over to a fully-vegan brand back in 2018. So, beware if you're looking at some of their stock on Amazon (or in other places) prior to 2018, as certain models from that time contain leather and other animal-derived components.
