Ration.L Vegan gender neutral trainers

Ration.L is Likely a Vegan Brand

Ration.L is likely a fully vegan brand. In 2023 they were Vegan Society-certified, which means their suppliers and manufacturers had to sign a legal statement of assurance form, stating that no animal by-products (including glues, dyes and solvents) are used in the production of any of their shoes, clothing and accessories. As of March, 2024, their certification has lapsed, but avoiding animal-derived materials is very much built into the ethos of the brand.

About Ration.L

"Each process is thought through to ensure we are providing the best products for both consumers and our planet. Our products encourage a healthier happier lifestyle so please enjoy them and feel good about our planet." - Ration.L team

Is Ration.L an ethically vegan brand?

Yes! Ration.L is an intentionally and ethically vegan brand, rather than one that uses vegan materials out of convenience, or for other reasons. According to the brand, "We love animals as much as you do thats why all of our collections are vegan & toxic free."

What materials are used to make their trainers?

The uppers of Ration.L trainers is a certified non-toxic Eco-PU. Their laces are made from Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton. Their eyelets are made from The Global Recycle Standard (GRS) certified recycled aluminium.

Are their shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?

From an environmentally-friendly materials standpoint, Ration.L's "R-Kind" trainers are at least somewhat eco-friendly, as they're mainly made "eco-PU," as well as from organic cotton, and recycled aluminum. And while the synthetics they use in their uppers are generally considered worse for the environment than recycled synthetics, or natural materials, those virgin synthetic materials are still considered to be more environmentally friendly than animal-derived leathers. This is backed up by data from inside the fashion industry as well as outside of it. For the data, please see Collective Fashion Justice’s CIRCUMFAUNA initiative. Ration.L also sells repurposed trainers with slight imperfections, small marks, or that used for display, at a lower cost.

Does production of Ration.L shoes create a lot of CO2 emissions?

From a carbon footprint standpoint, it's difficult to asses the impact that their shoes have, and what they do to remediate it. Ration.L does not currently provide data as to their environmental impact or remediation efforts, so it's difficult to accurately asses them in these areas.

Does Ration.L use ‘green’ shipping methods?

Yes! Ration.L offers green shipping in partnership with dpd (Dynamic Parcel Delivery).

Do they use eco-friendly packaging?

Yes, the brand uses FSC-certified packaging to ship their sneakers/trainers. According to the brand, "We use ethical and recyclable card and paper to pack your favourite trainers in."

Are their shoes recyclable?

We've reached out to the Ration.L team to get further details on this, and are awaiting reply.

How should I dispose of my worn out Ration.L shoes?

Ration.L's approach to shoe recycling involves reselling them if they only have minor faults (such as a production fault) They also recommend. The brand also recommends donating them if you are finished with them. Get it Vegan agrees, and also recommends either trying to have them repaired, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components.

Where can I buy Ration.L shoes?

Ration.L shoes can be purchased from their website, and can be shipped worldwide. They can also be purchased on well-established online platforms such as Immaculate Vegan and Wolf & Badger.

Do their shoes ever go on sale?

We haven’t noticed any sales for Ration.L shoes when visiting their site and perusing their social channels. However, they do sell refurbished R-Kind trainers (their current line of trainers) at a discount on their online store. It's also worth noting that Ration.L as a brand does not support Black Friday, and finds it quite wasteful - which is consistent with their views on sustainability.

Where are Ration.L trainers made?

Their shoes are made in Vietnam.

Are their shoes made with fair labour?

Ration.L trainers are made in Vietnam. As such, it's difficult for us as an outside, non-certifying 3rd party to verify whether or not they ensure their factory enforces all international and local labour laws, regulations and fair working standards to provide a safe and fair working environment for their workers. According to the brand, "We wouldn't have achieved our vegan society certification without all the relevant paper works and audit checks. Our founders have a strong history working with the factory before the brand was created and have had the opportunity to visit them personally. I think our vegan society cert speaks for itself."

Does Ration.L promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?

Ration.L incorporates some elements of a circular economy, such as: using organic, recycled and non-toxic materials; making timeless styles; avoiding discount-level pricing; avoiding Black Friday and mass-market sales; using (at least some) eco-friendly packaging; and selling refurbished and gently used models.

Is Ration.L a charitable company?

According to Ration.L for every pair sold, 5% of profits goes to The Brain & Spine Foundation Charity (Registered UK Charity No. 1098528). The brand also claims to plant one tree for every pair sold.
