About Supergreen

"It only remains to offer it to you in pre-order. This system guarantees a reasoned production. We thumb our nose at fast fashion and overproduction. It's what you want, it's eco-responsible and it's sustainable." - Supergreen team

What materials are used to make Supergreen shoes?

For the uppers, Supergreen says they only work with materials made of renewable plants, such as corn fibre, or 100% natural materials when possible. For their soles, they use bio-sourced materials such as rubber milk, or recycled materials.
Within each shoe's description on the Supergreen website it will give a detailed breakdown of the materials used to make that shoe (in some cases, it will also include the country of origin of that material). For example, their Black Jerry Vegan Chelsea boot is made up like this:
-The elastic is made of recycled PET (plastic bottles)
-The sole is made of 70% recycled rubber
-The insole is made of memory cork
-The upper is a corn fibre-based material that's 69% bio-sourced, mostly based of corn fiber (43%) and wood fiber (26%). The remaining 31% is traditional synthetic, an anti-tear polymer. This material is Oeko Tex 100 certified, guaranteeing the absence of substances harmful to humans and the environment.

Are Supergreen shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?

From an environmentally-friendly materials standpoint, Supergreen's shoes, boots, & sandals could be considered quite eco-friendly (at least when compared to other leather-look shoes), as they do incorporate many natural and/or recycled materials into their designs. They also focus on durability, which is a key factor in sustainability. And while the plant-based 'leather' they use in their shoes is generally considered worse for the environment than organic natural materials, plant-based leather materials are still considered to be more environmentally friendly than animal-derived leathers (due to the inclusion of various toxic chemicals used in the tanning process, among other reasons). This is backed up by data from inside the fashion industry as well as outside of it. For the data, please see Collective Fashion Justice’s CIRCUMFAUNA initiative.

Does production of Supergreen shoes create a lot of CO2 emissions?

From a carbon footprint standpoint, it's difficult to asses the impact that Supergreen has, and what they do to remediate it. Supergreen does not currently provide data as to their environmental impact or remediation efforts, so it's difficult to accurately asses them in these areas.

Does Supergreen use ‘green’ shipping methods?

It's unclear from their website if Supergreen uses net-zero or negative emissions shipping partners, either domestically or internationally. We’ve asked them for clarification, and are currently awaiting reply.

How should I dispose of my old Supergreen shoes?

We’ve asked the Supergreen team if they currently have, or are developing, a shoe recycling program, and are awaiting reply. In the meantime, Get it Vegan recommends either trying to have them repaired, donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components.

What stores can I buy their shoes from?

Supergreen shoes can be purchased from their website, and can only be shipped within Europe.

Where are Supergreen shoes made?

Are their shoes made with fair labour?

Does Supergreen promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?

Supergreen incorporates several elements of a circular economy/slow fashion model, such as: only having products available by pre-order (which helps reduce over-production); employing fair labour; using recycled materials; using plant-derived leathers; avoiding discount-level pricing; making timeless styles; making their products by hand; and sourcing materials from close to where their shoes are made. According to the brand, "We only offer our shoes on pre-order or in very limited series. This way, we avoid any unnecessary overproduction. Last but not least, we offer our shoes directly to you at the right price because we don't need to pass on the effect of sales."

Is Supergreen a charitable brand?

We’ve asked their team about any charitable initiatives they're involved with (if any), and are currently awaiting reply, as there is no such information available on their website.

Is Supergreen an ethically vegan brand?

Supergreen is an intentionally and ethically vegan brand, rather than one that uses vegan materials out of convenience, or for other reasons. According to the brand, "Being sensitive to animal welfare, we are happy to offer this alternative to traditional leather."
